The storms that rolled through West Michigan this month put a lot of neighborhoods in the dark. Jenison, Hudsonville, Georgetown Township, parts of Grandville and Wyoming — plenty of us spent an evening watching the Consumers Energy outage map and listening to generators hum down the street. Then the power comes back, the fridge kicks on, the clocks blink, and the house starts feeling normal again.
Except the AC never restarts. The thermostat says 81 and climbing, the outdoor unit sits there silent, and now you're wondering if the storm killed a system that was working fine two days ago.
Here's the good news: more than half the time, an AC that won't restart after an outage doesn't need a repair at all. It needs someone to check a short list of things in the right order. This post is that list. Work through it top to bottom and you'll either have cool air blowing again in fifteen minutes, or you'll know exactly what to tell us when you call.
Start at the Thermostat
The thermostat is the brain, and it's the cheapest thing on the list, so check it first.
If the screen is blank, don't assume the worst. Battery-powered thermostats love to die during outages, because that's when you actually look at them. Swap in fresh batteries and give it a minute. If your thermostat is powered by the system itself — most smart thermostats and many newer digital ones are — a blank screen means it's not getting its 24 volts from the furnace or air handler. That points you to the breaker panel, which is our next stop anyway.
If the screen is on but acting confused, the outage may have wiped its settings. Check that it's set to Cool, the fan is on Auto, and the target temperature is at least a few degrees below the room temperature. Smart thermostats sometimes reboot into an odd state after power blips; pulling one off its base for thirty seconds and reseating it clears more gremlins than you'd think. Check the Breaker Panel — and Reset Once, Not Five Times
Head to your electrical panel and look for anything tripped or sitting in the middle position. You're looking for two breakers: one labeled for the AC or condenser (usually a double-wide 30 to 60 amp breaker) and one for the furnace or air handler. The furnace breaker matters even in July, because the furnace blower moves your cool air and its board powers your thermostat.
A tripped breaker after an outage isn't unusual. Power rarely comes back cleanly. It can surge, sag, and flicker in the first seconds, and a breaker doing its job will trip on that.
The rule to remember: reset it once. Flip the breaker fully off, then firmly back on. If the system starts and stays running, you're likely done. If the breaker trips again — right away or within a few minutes — stop. Do not stand there flipping it back on. A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you there's a short, a seized motor, or damaged wiring downstream, and every reset shoves full current into that fault. Look at the Outdoor Disconnect
Next to your outdoor unit, mounted on the wall of the house, there's a small gray box. That's the disconnect. Inside is either a pull-out block or a switch, and it's how technicians (and sometimes homeowners, and occasionally curious kids) cut power to the condenser.
Open the box and make sure the pull-out is seated all the way in, right side up, or the switch is on. Storm cleanup is a classic culprit here. Somebody bumps it moving a ladder, or it was pulled during a previous service visit and never fully seated, and the outage gets blamed for something that's just an unplugged air conditioner. Takes ten seconds to check.
Give the Compressor Time to Wake Up
This is the step that saves the most unnecessary service calls. Most air conditioners built in the last couple of decades have a time-delay built in — five to ten minutes, sometimes longer — before the compressor will restart after losing power. It's there for a good reason. Restarting a compressor against the refrigerant pressure still trapped in the system is one of the hardest things you can do to it, so the delay lets those pressures equalize first.
Some smart thermostats stack their own protective delay on top. So set the thermostat to cool, then walk away for a half hour. Make lunch. Don't hover over the outdoor unit deciding it's dead at minute four. If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit stays silent past the 30-minute mark, move on down the list.
Next time the power goes out for more than a few minutes, walk to the panel and flip the AC breaker off. When power returns it often comes back dirty — a surge riding in front of it — and an AC that's switched off can't be hit. Wait five minutes after the lights stabilize, flip the breaker back on, and let the system restart on clean power.
The Low-Voltage Fuse: the 3-Amp Part That Stops Everything
Inside your furnace or air handler, on the control board, there's a small automotive-style blade fuse — usually 3 or 5 amps. It protects the low-voltage circuit that runs your thermostat and tells the outdoor unit when to start. A surge on the line, or a brief short during the chaos of power flickering on and off, will pop it. When it goes, the thermostat often goes blank and nothing in the system responds, even though every breaker looks fine.
If you're comfortable doing so, kill power to the furnace, pull the access panel, and look for the fuse on the board. If the metal strip inside is broken, that's your answer. It's the same fuse used in cars, and replacing it with the same amperage is a fair DIY fix. But know this: fuses blow for a reason. If a new one pops immediately, there's a short in the low-voltage wiring — sometimes storm-related, like a wire chafed where it runs to the outdoor unit — and that's diagnostic work for us.
Check the Condensate Float Switch
This one surprises people after outages. If your power was out for hours on a humid July day, your house soaked up moisture the whole time. When the AC finally restarts, it wrings all that water out at once, and a drain line that was borderline clogged can back up fast. Many systems have a float switch on the drain pan or line that shuts the AC down before water overflows onto your furnace or ceiling.
So if the system ran for a while after the power came back and then quit, look for water around the indoor unit or a small switch riding on the drain line or pan. A backed-up drain is a fixable problem. Ignoring the switch or bypassing it is how you end up with a stained ceiling below the attic air handler.
What NOT to Do
A few things I see after every storm that make cheap problems expensive:
- Don't keep resetting a tripping breaker. Once. That's the limit. After that you're feeding current into a fault.
- Don't open the sealed refrigerant system. No gauges from the hardware store, no poking at line fittings, no "topping it off." That system holds pressure and requires EPA certification for a reason.
- Don't hose down electrical components. Rinsing storm debris off the outdoor coil with the power off is fine, and honestly a good idea. Spraying water into the electrical compartment, the disconnect, or a unit that's energized is not.
- Don't run a unit that's buzzing loudly, humming without starting, or smells hot. That's a component failing in real time. Shut it off at the thermostat and the breaker, and call.
When It's Actually Surge Damage
If you've walked the whole list — thermostat has power and is calling for cooling, breakers on, disconnect seated, thirty minutes of patience, fuse intact, no float switch tripped — and the outdoor unit still won't run, the surge probably took something with it. The usual suspects, in order of how often we find them:
