When Should I Replace My Furnace

If you live in the Grand Rapids or West Michigan area it’s likely your furnace was already in place when you moved into your home.  The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure you know the age, make and model number of your existing furnace.  If you can’t find this information, call Mazure’s and we’ll help you properly identify your furnace.

Furnace Replacement Considerations

The average furnace made 10-20 years ago will typically last between 10-20 years.  Today’s models operate reliably and efficiently for 20-30 years if taken care of.  If your furnace is more than 15 years old, you should consider furnace replacement in the near future.  Setting the age of your furnace aside, here are some other telltale signs that your furnace may need either repaired or replaced:

• If your heating bills continue to rise while usage remains the same.
• Humidity problems in your home.
• Excessive noise like rattles, buzzes and hums.
• Your furnace emits excessive dust or soot.
• Hot and cold spots within your home.
• If your furnace is in constant need of repairs.

Change Your Air Filter

We can’t stress enough how important it is to change your air filter on your furnace.  Your furnace filter is designed to remove dust from air as it passes through your furnace.  If this filter isn’t replaced and gets plugged up, it will cause resistance with the air flow and your furnace will work that much harder to maintain temperature.

Your furnace is designed to have a certain amount of air flow or CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) to operate efficiently.  If your filter is plugged, you’re not getting the proper air flow which could put your family in danger of the silent killer called Carbon Monoxide.  So if you’re having problems with your furnace, the first thing we recommend is changing that furnace filter.  Depending on the type of filter your furnace uses, it’s recommended that you change your furnace filter 2-4 times per year.

Cost of Furnace Repair vs. Replacement

As a general rule of thumb, if your furnace has reached 3/4 of its expected lifespan and repairs will cost you more than 30% of the replacement cost, then it’s time for professional furnace replacement.  There’s no point in dumping more money into an older furnace when today’s furnaces are lasting longer and are much more efficient.
