AC Short Cycling: Why Your Air Conditioner Keeps Turning On and Off

"My AC kicks on, runs a few minutes, shuts back off, and then ten minutes later it does the whole thing again. All day." That's short cycling, and it's one of the most misunderstood problems in this trade, because the system technically still works. The house is sort of cool. Nothing is obviously broken. So people live with it for a whole summer.

Let me define it plainly. A healthy air conditioner on a warm West Michigan day runs in cycles of roughly 10 to 20 minutes, a couple of times an hour. On a brutal afternoon it might run almost nonstop, and that's fine too. Short cycling is different: the system starts, runs two to five minutes, quits before it's accomplished much, and repeats. Over and over. If you stand by the outdoor unit and it starts more than three or four times in an hour on a mild day, you've got it.

After nearly forty years of running calls around Jenison, Hudsonville, and Grand Rapids, I can tell you short cycling is never the actual disease. It's a symptom, and the causes range from a five-dollar filter to a conversation nobody wants to have about the size of the system. Let's go through them in order.

Why Short Cycling Is a Triple Problem

Before the causes, here's why I take this seriously even when the house feels "okay."

Comfort. An air conditioner does two jobs: it cools the air and it wrings moisture out of it. The dehumidifying only happens when the system runs long enough for the indoor coil to stay cold and condense water for a good stretch. Short cycles never get there. That's why a short-cycling house reads 72 on the thermostat and still feels muggy and clammy, especially in our lake-humidity summers. Cost. Startup is the expensive part of a cooling cycle. The compressor draws a big surge of current getting going, then settles into efficient steady running. A short-cycling system pays the startup toll constantly and skips the efficient part. You get higher bills for worse cooling. Worst of both.

Wear. This is the one that turns into big invoices. Every start slams the compressor and arcs across the contactor points. A system doing 40 starts a day instead of 8 is doing five summers of wear in one. Short cycling is exactly how a mid-size repair becomes a compressor replacement, and a compressor is the most expensive part in the machine.

The Causes, From Simple to Serious

A Dirty Air Filter

Start here. Always. A clogged filter starves the indoor coil of airflow, the coil runs too cold, and the system trips its own limit switches and shuts down. Given enough time the coil ices into a solid block. Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, replace it, and see if the cycling settles down over the next day.

Thermostat Placement or Thermostat Trouble

The thermostat is the brain, and if the brain gets bad information, the system behaves strangely. A thermostat mounted where afternoon sun hits it, or right in the airstream of a supply vent, gets blasted with hot or cold air that doesn't represent the house. The vent case is sneaky: the AC starts, cold air washes over the thermostat, the thermostat thinks the whole house is cool, and it shuts the system off in three minutes. A Frozen Indoor Coil

Ice and short cycling feed each other. Low airflow or low refrigerant lets the coil freeze, the frozen coil blocks airflow entirely, pressures go sideways, and safeties shut the system down. It thaws a little, restarts, refreezes. If you see frost on the copper lines or water around the furnace, shut the system off and let it thaw fully. Then read why your AC freezes up, because ice always has a cause underneath it.

A Dirty Condenser Coil

The outdoor unit's whole job is dumping heat, and it can't do that through a mat of cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, and dirt. A choked condenser drives pressures and temperatures up until the compressor's overload protection trips. It cools off for a few minutes, restarts, overheats again. That's a short cycle driven from the outside. The fix is often just cleaning the condenser coil, which is a job most homeowners can do safely with the power off and a garden hose.

A Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant doesn't get used up. If the charge is low, it leaked out somewhere, and a low charge makes the system trip low-pressure safeties, freeze the coil, and cycle on and off while cooling worse and worse. This one isn't a DIY item. Finding and fixing the leak, then weighing in the correct charge, is a gauges-and-license job. A Failing Capacitor or Contactor

The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor their starting kick; the contactor is the switch that connects power. When either one weakens, the unit starts hard, hums, stalls, or drops out mid-cycle and tries again. I'll add a timely note: this month's storms left a lot of weakened capacitors around town. A surge doesn't always kill a capacitor outright. Sometimes it just knocks the strength out of it, and the unit limps for weeks before the symptoms show. I was out in Jenison earlier this month on a "compressor's dead" call that turned out to be exactly that, a storm-weakened capacitor, fixed in under an hour. Then the temperature drifts up and it does it again. Forever. No part is broken, so no repair fixes it.

Bigger isn't better in this business. A right-sized system runs those long, steady 15-minute cycles that dry the air, even out the rooms, and go easy on the compressor. Before you call anyone, spend 20 minutes with your phone's stopwatch. Note when the outdoor unit starts, how long it runs, and how long it rests, for two or three cycles. Telling us "it runs about three minutes and rests about seven" instead of "it keeps turning off" genuinely narrows the diagnosis before the truck leaves the shop.

What to Check Yourself, and When to Call

Safe homeowner territory: the filter, the thermostat's location and batteries, open vents, a gentle condenser rinse with the power off, and letting an iced coil thaw. That list solves a real share of the short-cycling calls I run, and I'd rather you check it than pay a diagnostic fee for a filter.

Call for AC repair when the basics check out and it's still cycling, when there's ice that comes back after thawing, when the unit hums or clicks without starting, or when it began right after a storm or outage. And shut it down first, not after, if the breaker keeps tripping or you smell anything electrical burning. Forcing a system through those symptoms is how you buy a compressor.

Don't Let It Limp Into September

One more thing, because it's late July and I know how this goes. A system that's been short cycling all season has been beating on its compressor and contactor for two months. The temptation is to nurse it through Labor Day and then forget it exists until the first hot week of next June, when it fails on the exact day every shop in West Michigan is slammed.

Get it looked at before fall instead. Late August and September are the easiest time of year to get a convenient appointment, the diagnosis is the same, and the repair is almost always cheaper than the version of it that waited ten more months. If it's been cycling all summer, put it on the calendar now, not next June.
